Emma Stone, recipient of her second Oscar for Best Actress, joins the ranks of distinguished actresses such as Ingrid Bergman, Jane Fonda, and Jodie Foster. Stone had previously won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in La La Land, where she unexpectedly triumphed over the favorite, Lily Gladstone.
In the year Antonio Banderas was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for Pain and Glory (2019), he humbly acknowledged that he stood no chance against Joaquin Phoenix's compelling portrayal in Joker. Similarly, Emma Stone's performance in Poor Creatures, a role as daring as it is intense, has earned her a second Oscar for Best Actress. This achievement places her among the elite few in Hollywood history, alongside iconic actresses like Bette Davis, Meryl Streep (who has now won a third Oscar in the supporting actress category), Ingrid Bergman, Vivien Leigh, Jane Fonda, and Jodie Foster.
Before her latest win, Emma Stone had already garnered several awards for her role in Poor Creatures, including the BAFTA for Best Actress and the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. However, winning the Oscar seemed uncertain, with half of the odds favoring Lily Gladstone, the Indigenous actress who starred in The Moon Killers. Perhaps that's why Stone appeared visibly moved when accepting the Oscar, taking a moment to acknowledge her main competitor in the race for glory.
Stone's bold performance has yielded extraordinary results for the 35-year-old actress, who was born and raised in a small town in Arizona to a construction entrepreneur and a homemaker. In Poor Creatures, she portrays Bella Baxter in Giorgos Lanthimos's visually striking and dizzying narrative, a character who rescues a sort of Frankenstein's doctor from the sea to implant a brain into a child, forcing him to learn everything from scratch. The indefatigable Bella follows her primal instincts, discovering unapologetic sexuality, becoming a prostitute in Paris, and consistently provoking the audience. It's a role perfectly suited for an Oscar, yet Gladstone's magnificent work in Martin Scorsese's film made the competition fierce. Gladstone's anticipated triumph symbolized a nod to the awakening culture permeating Los Angeles and the Hollywood film industry. It would have marked the first win for a Native American actress, aligning with the Academy's desire to reinvent itself and demonstrate inclusivity. However, the thousands of voters ultimately passed her by. Moreover, Stone's win offered a chance, albeit indirectly, to rectify the mistake involving Sacheen Littlefeather, the Apache actress and activist whom Marlon Brando sent in 1973 to reject the Best Actor Oscar. Littlefeather had been honored by Stone the previous September, months before her passing, making the Oscar win even sweeter for the community. Emma Stone's triumph reaffirms her successful collaboration with Lanthimos. In their previous work together in The Favourite (2018), she was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. While she initially felt intimidated by her character in Poor Creatures, she eventually fell in love with her. "I was terrified of not living up to her as a character," she said. Now, she misses her.
